Southern Leyte to receive green banner award in Tacloban City

Maasin City (29 November) -- The National Nutrition Council (NNC) through Region VIII Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Z. Santiago has informed So. Leyte Governor Rosette Lerias that the province will be presented with a Green Banner Award as the Most Outstanding Province throughout the region in the field of nutrition.

So. Leyte will receive a Green Banner Award because it has shown outstanding performance in implementing its nutrition program through the Provincial Nutrition Council with Gov. Lerias as the council chairman and Dr. Zenaida Abiera as the Nutrition Action Officer. They were invited to receive such during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on December 8 at the Kanhuraw Convention Center in Tacloban City.

It was learned that the award was based on the recommendation made by the interagency Regional Evaluation Team (RET) and was approved by the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC). So. Leyte who will also be given a Special Citation was competing other (5) provinces throughout Eastern Visayas.

The awarding ceremony will also give recognition to the City of Maasin which will be given a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award being consistently a Green Banner awardee for three consecutive years while Green Banner Awards will be given to Limasawa, Southern Leyte being the Outstanding Municipality in the Region and in the Province. Palapag, Northern Samar and Maslog, Eastern Samar will also receive the Outstanding Municipality in the Province.

Other awards to be given were as follows: Outstanding City in the Region - Maasin City; Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Awards from Tacloban City, Maasin City, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Ormoc City, Calbayog City, Padre Burgos in So. Leyte and in Daram, Samar.

On the other hand, the Regional Outstanding Barangays will be awarded to the municipality of Limasawa in So. Leyte being the regional winner and Sto. Niņo in Ormoc City, Brgy. 74 in Tacloban City, Brgy. Mahayahay in Maasin City, Japitan, Dolores of Eastern Samar, Nipa, Palapag of Northern Samar, Cagnipa of Calbayog City and Buscada, Basey of Samar for the Outstanding Barangays in the Province/City category.

Moreover, the affair will also honor Outstanding Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO) throughout the region to name as follows: Sonia Evardone from Palapag,Northern Samar; Necitas Bula ofMaslog, Eastern Samar; Flora Dagohoy of Limasawa, So. Leyte and Nascencia Abad of Naval, Biliran.

The awarding ceremony is expected to be graced by Department of Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque as the keynote speaker. (PIA) [top]
