Glan mayor offers scholarship grants to Sangihe students
GLAN, Sarangani (1 December) -- Mayor Enrique Yap Jr. has offered scholarship grants to students from neighboring Indonesian islands of Sangihe.
"Now I can announce I am offering to the government of Sangihe that I am giving you five slots scholarship," the mayor told the visiting delegation of government and business leaders from Sangihe Regency Tuesday.
"Free education. Study college in Glan," Yap said. "The municipal government will be the one to pay."
Glan has private and public technical and vocational schools.
The offer corresponds with the sisterhood agreement signed by officials of Sangihe Regency and JAGS-CT (Jose Abad Santos-Glan-Sarangani Cooperation Triangle), which Yap chairs.
The agreement places education on top of its concerns.
The Regency of Sangihe, which is part of North Sulawesi Province, is the nearest Indonesian group of islands to Glan.
It has 112 islands lying between the bigger islands of Sulawesi and Mindanao.
The municipal government of Glan has been giving free education to its constituents. All students enrolled in public elementary and high schools get free miscellaneous and Parent, Teacher, Community Association fees.
The municipality also provides free school bag to all Grade 1 pupils with complete supply of notebook, paper, pencil, eraser, sharpener and ruler. (SIO/PIA 12) [top]
