Meningococcemia is curable, no cause for alarm - DOH

Davao City (22 December) -- Health Secretary Francisco Duque 111 urged local residents particularly those in far-flung barangays not to panic and stay calm and amid the "Meningococcemia scare" among residents in many parts of the country.
There is no cause for alarm, he said adding that Meningococcemia can be prevented and controlled through proper hygiene.
The DOH made the assurance to the people that this disease is curable in the wake of Meningo case in some parts of the province which panicked residents.
Secretary Duque said the disease is curable and could only be transmitted through direct contact or exposure with the infected person.
Meningo case as reported in some newspapers were isolated and very unlikely to be tagged as an outbreak.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the DOH to widely conduct information drive on said disease which scares some residents due to the reported Meningo cases.
DOH Secretary Duque said there is nothing to fear about as he instructed the DOH nationwide to hold massive information drive to assuage public fears. (PIA XI) [top]
