Davao vows to eliminate drug problem

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (31 January) -- The city government, in its sustained campaign against the use of prohibited drugs, is committed to eliminate (as much as possible) narcotic problems in Davao.

Anti-Drug Abuse Council (ADAC) of the Office of the City Mayor, action officer Atty. Eliseo Braganza said the government and private sector must work together and treat narcotic drugs as an urgent problem that should be eliminated.

We should address the problem on prohibited drugs in a spirit of sincere and mutual cooperation with the entire community, he said during the ARENA XI radio forum over DXRP Radyo ng Bayan anchored by Josette Olivera of DXRP and the Philippine Information Agency.

Those who have vested interest should set aside personal agenda for the sake of our millions of people whose lives are threatened by drug trade, he said.

A report from the National Drug Enforcement and Prevention Coordinating Center showed that active drug users only numbered (in 2002) more than 10,000; now there are about 1.7 million and most of them are young adults.

Majority of the drug users were within the 15-19 age bracket.

Meanwhile, Antonio Uy, national president of the Kilos Laya Laban (KILL) sa Droga expressed the need to be united against illegal drugs.

Uy said KILL Droga has joined the ADAC in soliciting the support of the community in the fight against illegal drugs.

We should have a teamwork to make the national anti-drug program of action work and we need the involvement of all sectors, consolidate and orchestrate our actions, Uy said.

The anti-drug program of the city will be a dependable vehicle in disseminating information and educating the students and the public in general.

The city government, in a bid to eradicate drug menace has been conducting drug information campaign to various schools and far -flung barangays. The campaign aims to create a sustained awareness on the dangers brought about by prohibited drugs.

"By bringing the proper information and education to the people, we hope to steer the public in supporting the drug campaign to prevent further damage that drugs may bring", Atty. Braganza said. (PIA-XI) [top]
