PIA Press Release

Military operations intensified, one rebel killed in Camarines Sur

LEGAZPI CITY (31 January) -- Fresh clashes between Philippine Army soldiers and the communist movement occurred over the weekend in the hinterlands of Camarines Sur that ended in the killing of a New People's Army (NPA) rebel and wounding of three others, the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Civil Relations Service (AFP-CRS) said.

Military internal security operations (ISO) continues to intensify in the hinterlands in the Bicol region as part of their "Bantay Laya II" program aimed at curbing the three-decade-old insurgency problem in the country.

The CRS in Bicol said Philippine Army troopers of the 42nd Infantry Battalion, 9th Infantry Division clashed with the NPA rebels on Saturday morning in the hinterlands of Barangay Tinirabida, Nabua town some 35 kilometers south of Iriga City in Camarines Sur.

Capt. Lowen Marquez, Bicol CRS commander, said a team of elite Scout Rangers led by 2Lt. Noni Alcala while on combat operation engaged a nine-man NPA guerillas in a 15-minute running gun battle that ended with the death of one still unidentified rebel and wounding of three others who were dragged by their comrades while fleeing the battle scene.

Alcala in his report said they recovered from the fight scene foodstuffs collected from residents from nearby villages and "Permit to Campaign' paraphernalia including subversive documents.

The CRS Bicol said that since the start of this year the communist movement suffered a number of casualties in five encounters with Philippine Army soldiers in the provinces of Sorsogon and Albay, and the latest incident in Camarines Sur.

Marquez noted that since the start of January 2007 no reported clashes took place in the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate since the rebels use these places as their "rest and recreation" areas following fierce fighting with government troops in the Bicol mainland provinces of Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon.
