Midsayap skirmishes displace 700 families

Davao City (1 February) -- Seven Barangays of Midsayap town in Cotabato province were affected by the armed encounter last Saturday between CVOs and armed men believed to be members of MILF at barangay Mudsing. The other Barangays include Rangeban, Tugal, Lower Glad, Nabalawag, Tumbras and Kapinpilan.

According to the latest report, the Midsayap LGU and concerned regional relief agencies are continuously extending assistance to the more than 700 families presently housed at various evacuation centers in the area.

Although the situation is already under control, Midsayap Mayor Romeo Arana has not allowed the evacuees to return to their respective homes as yet. Arana confirms land conflict as the root cause of the armed confrontation.

To avoid the recurrence of similar incident, the joint Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) and International Monitoring Team (IMT) of the GRP-MILF peace panels have agreed to establish immediately the Joint Monitoring and Assistance Center (JMAC) in the area.
