Women's trade fair, forum open at Davao mall

Davao City (9 March) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) shall lead today's opening of the Women Trade Fair and Exhibit Bazaar at NCCC Mall activity area.

Director Ester Acebedo-Versoza of DSWD said the event highlights the role of women entrepreneurs as the Women's Month observance this years which carries the theme "CEDAW ng Bayan: Kabuhayan ng Kababaihan." CEDAW stands for Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Director Versoza said the fair opens after the Women's Day early morning parade at 6:30 a.m. today which will start at Freedom Park along Roxas Blvd.She said to be showcased in the fair are innovative products of women micro-entrepreneurs from the different cities and towns in the region.

"We are inviting all women and especially the men sector to visit our Trade Fair which will underscore the best of women's craftsmanship and ingenuity in this part of Mindanao," Versoza urged.

Meanwhile, the Women's Forum is slated tomorrow at 9:30 in the morning with participants from the local government units, members of KALIPI, various women development workers, women councils and associations from all over Davao Region.The forum shall provide women leaders a venue to learn and discuss livelihood and entrepreneurship trends, raise issues and concerns affecting them, and enable them strategize ways to strengthen their organizations. This concern is embodied in the Framework Plan for Women that speaks of human rights, economic empowerment, and gender-responsive governance.

Keynote speaker for the forum is Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad, family, women and children committee chair. Forum discussants are women leaders and women rights advocates from DTI, DOLE and Ateneo de Davao Unversity,

Other activities marking the month-long observance are radio programs with DXRP, DXRD and DXAB; Ugnayan press conference at Royal Mandaya Hotel; and SWD Forum at Garden Oases Restaurant.

The DSWD together with other agencies annually observe the Women's Month, Women's Week, Women's Rights and International Peace Day, Women's Role in History Month and National Women's Day. (DSWD/degsduron/PIA XI) [top]
