Comelec La Union cleanses voters' list

San Fernando City, La Union (13 April) -- The Provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) Office of La Union bared in their Consolidated Quarterly Progress Report for the fourth quarter of 2006 (system of continuing registration) and the date of ERB Quarterly Hearing as of January 8-12, 2007, a total of 1,782 registrants were removed from the certified voters’ list (CVL) for the May 14 elections.

La Union COMELEC Provincial Election Supervisor II, Atty. Marino V. Salas identified those removed as those who were already dead, double registrants (as per Resolution No. 1513) and double entries, (as per Resolution No. 1184) ; transferred to other city/municipalities, whose applications with incomplete data, and voters who were deactivated.

In their report, the poll official said they have noted that San Fernando City, the lone city in the province has a discrepancy in the total number of 3523 registrants vis a vis the total number of registered voters as a result of having completely updated the “x” and “y” files and is undergoing cleansing on the multiple entries.

In line with this, the Provincial COMELEC Supervisor explained that the cleansing process will determine who should be removed from the CVL and this effort will lead us to a better and credible elections as well as to erase and clear the doubt of allegations that COMELEC is involved in cheating during elections.

Based from their Consolidated Project of Precincts dated March 12, 2007, (as of January 8-12, 2007), a total of 382,005 are registered voters in La Union covering 576 barangays, 410 voting centers, 2,677 established precincts and a total of 1,908 clustered precincts.

While in their Consolidated Quarterly Progress Report for the fourth quarter of year 2006, a total of 25,070 were listed as new registrants, 906 transferred to another city/municipalities and the total number reactivated - 300 while those deactivated, - 28.

With the 19 municipalities of the Province of La Union and one City, the municipality of Bauang has the largest number of registrants removed due to deaths, double registry, double entries, and deactivated. It was followed by towns of Aringay, San Fernando City and Agoo.

Meanwhile, a Commission on Elections (COMELEC) official announced recently that based from the report of COMELEC’s Elections and Barangay Affairs Department, they have scratched out more than 1 million Filipinos from the certified voters list (CVL) for the May 14 polls.

COMELEC Commissioner Renee Sarmiento said in a statement the clean up process is the first time that has been done, after so many years, the voters’ list is now 100% clean, a small step to the road of a credible and clean elections. (PIA La Union) [top]
