Commentary: Economy to determine results of May polls
Tacloban City (April 13) -- Considering the tide of optimism and the hope for the future that is building up among the Filipino people, the economy is the determining factor that will shape the result of the forthcoming May 14 elections.
The economy is the overriding substantive element in this campaign, not the hype, the negatives or the noise.
It is surprising then if not “a little annoying” as one political adviser commented, why the omnibus campaign advertisement of the Genuine Opposition highlights the problems of the country.
It is completely misleading for the opposition to give emphasis on the problems and disregard the progress that the government has been doing for the country. To say that all the country is facing now are problems, is just like admitting the fact that these candidates, most of who are re-electionists and former senators, did not do anything in order to correct or mitigate these problems.
As one onlooker commented when shown the advertisement, “these are the problems which could have been completely solve if only the opposition did their duty to unite with the Administration instead of blocking the solutions to these problems.” They are the ones exposing their shortcomings.
Indeed, the advertisement will soon boomerang on the opposition once the people realize that it did not really represent the true situation in the country.
On the other hand, the Team Unity’s theme of their campaign ads focuses on the positive developments that have been happening in the country.
On this basis, combined with the wellspring of support from the local government leaders and the benefited communities, the truth will come out and the people will vote for unity, for more investments and well paying jobs and the continuity of social payback and reform. (PIA 8) [top]
