E-Commerce for farmers to hike their income - DA
By Rose B. Palacio
Davao City (19 April) -- Department of Agriculture (DA) regional executive director Roger Chio said electronic commerce (e-commerce) is an opportunity for the farmers to improve their livelihood and increase their farm incomes.
Director Chio stressed that in the age of information technology, giving money to farmers is not enough. Giving knowledge and opportunities are equally important, he said.
E-commerce is a business tool via the internet. It is defined as the buying and selling of goods, services and information between two or more trading parties over an electronic medium.
The e-commerce compels the government to complete computerization. "We have to accelerate our efforts to make us of the technology to the benefit of our farmers", he said.
Among the challenges the government is facing is to accelerate internet usage to resolve digital divide.
The agriculture department for its part will participate in developing policies particularly in the formulation of a regulatory framework to ensure greater and cheaper access to information technology for the poor.
The government aims to help farmers be able to market their produce and for them to get the best prices no matter where the markets are.
The e-commerce is embodied under Republic Act 8792. It is but proper for the farmers to be aware of the e-commerce concept and how it will be operational and what benefits it will give to the agribusiness sector, he said. (PIA-XI) [top]
