29 students from AgSur now DOST scholars

by Jose Jemuel B. Dael

AGUSAN DEL SUR (April 27) -- This province recorded for this year 29 new DOST scholars to take a four to five year BS courses in Science and Technology, a 30 percent leap from the six to eight qualifiers since the implementation of science and technology scholarship 13 years ago.

Engr. Andrea Cabonita, Provincial Science and Technology Officer said that from 2002 to 2006, the average number of passers is nine and five being the lowest number of passers and 12 being the highest.

Cabonita said that with the initiative of the DOST provincial office, series of reviews were conducted in cooperation with the selected schools in the province which significantly increased the list of passers to an all time high of 29 this year.

Abhel Ananoria of Agusan Sur National High School and one of the passers of this year's DOST scholarship program said that the exam is very difficult but he is grateful he passed.

He added that his parents' income could not afford what the scholarship grants could give him aside from the best education.

Ananoria encouraged the upcoming fourth year students to take exams or entrance scholarships, but he added that they should prioritize the DOST scholarship because of the benefits it offers.

Cabonita also said that under R.A. 7687 of the Science and Technology Scholarship Act, the scholars are entitled to a monthly stipend of P3,000-4,000, and allowances for books, transportations, uniform and group insurance. (PIA-Agusan del Sur) [top]
