Army condemns PTC activity of rebels

GAMU, Isabela (30 April) -- The Philippine Army’s 5th Infantry Division based here slammed the communist terrorists for their extortion activities as it received reports on Permit to Campaign being demanded from local candidates who campaign in so called rebels’ territories.

Army Col. Ed Maningding, commanding officer of the 503rd Infantry Brigade bared in an interview with a local TV station in Santiago City that in some remote areas especially in the hinterlands or forest regions of San Mariano, Jones, San Guillermo, Echague and other parts of the province, candidates cannot campaign unless they pay certain fees to the rebels in the areas.

In the past elections, local politicians fell prey to the illegal activity (collecting PTC fees) which forced them to shell out some amount for fear of being harmed or hostaged in the terrorists’ dens, the army officer said.

But Maningding warned candidates not to willingly give in to demands of the rebels or communist terrorists because in doing so it is already “tantamount to giving aid and comfort” to the enemies of the state.

“Just be wary of their (rebels’) unlawful activity (extortion) and more importantly avoid going to areas where you will only end up as victims,” he cautioned the local bets.

“We are closely watching them,” said Maningding of the terrorists’ lairs, movements and extortion. (PIA-Isabela) [top]
