Region 8 human rights body undertakes forum on right to suffrage

Tacloban City (May 2) -- In answer to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's call for clean, peaceful, orderly and credible elections, the Commission on Human Rights Regional Office 8 will undertake a Forum on Human Rights on May 4, 2007.

Atty. Desiree V. Pontejos, officer in charge of CHR-8, said that the Forum with the theme: "Usapang Karapatan Para Halalan" will be conducted simultaneously in all the CHR Regional Offices in the country. In the case of CHR Region 8, it will be conducted at the regional office at Paterno St., Tacloban City at 9:30 in the morning.

The issues at the Forum, Atty. Pontejos said, will primarily focus on the Right to Suffrage and how CHR's partnership with the local governments, concerned regional executive agencies and non-government organizations should encourage both the candidates and the electorate in order to fulfill their respective duties to ensure the holding of an honest, orderly and peaceful elections.

Aside from the local government executives, government and non-government leaders, the Commission on Human Rights also invited the media in recognition of its vital role in communicating the Commission's message to the people.

As the national human rights institution for the protection and promotion of human rights both under the Philippine Constitution and the United Nations System, the Commission on Human Rights is empowered to initiate and sustain application of the rights-based approach to governance to facilitate convergence of human rights and development.

The Commission's Right to Development Program is a system of monitoring rights-based programs and measures across institutions aimed at creating enabling environment for poverty reduction linked with the 9 components of good governance which are Electoral and Political Reforms, Right to Development, Judicial Reform, Anti-Corruption, Governance Review, Civil Service & Economic Management, Globalization and Corporate Citizenship, Decentralization & Local Governance.
