Davao City (19 June) -- Key players in the shipping industry are pushing for measures that would help improve this particular sector in Mindanao.
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) assistant secretary Engr. Merly Cruz said important insights will be tackled during the 6th Mindanao Shippers Conference (Minshipcon) on Thursday and Friday June 21 and 22, 2007 at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City.
Most of the participants will come from the associations of the island to include shippers, shipping companies, cargo forwarders and government agencies to discuss and present recommendations that can address major concerns of the industry.
The five main associations are Northern Mindanao Shippers' Association, Inc. (Norminsa) of Cagayan de Oro City; Zamboanga City Shippers' Association, Inc. (Zamcisa); SOCKSARGEN Shippers' Association, Inc. (SSA); Iligan Bay Shippers' Association, Inc. (Ibsa); and Zamboanga del Norte Shippers' Association, Inc. of Dipolog City.
Cruz said the hosting of the conference by Davao City could benefit greatly the Davao Region, the area being the major source of top export products such as fresh banana and banana chips.
She said Davao City's port and shipping industry players even exporters, can join and have the chance to share their insights even as she said that with this year's Shippers' Congress will focus on global competitiveness by which they can increase their knowledge on how to further their business and become globally competitive.
The congress is held in coordination with the DTI and the support of the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program and Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) and carries the theme "Efficient Shipping and Transport for Global Competitiveness". (PIA XI) [top]
