Works of int’l PWD winners showcased

by JMD Abangan

TAGUM CITY (20 June) -- From a mere cabinet-maker, orthopedic Emmanuel Tagalicud is now a housing contractor, employing able-bodied workers in the neighborhood.

“That could be a rare feat for someone missing his other leg,” Winifredo Espinosa of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) said as he shared success stories of differently-abled persons (PWDs) in a meeting of the Provincial Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons with the Provincial Social Welfare Office (PSWDO), which acted as the lead agency.

He wanted the council to showcase exploits of Davao del Norte’s own award-winning PWDs who had made it to the International Abilympics.

Tagalicud grabbed 4th place during the 6th International Abilympics in New Delhi, India in the cabinet-making competition and 6th place in the waste-reuse.

Prior to that, he got a gold medal for cabinet-making in the 2001 Philippine National Skills Competition.

Other Davao del Norte PWDs International Abilympics winners were Jeadel Joy Agripo, Hospicio Arcala, and Oscar Olegario.

Espinosa said Agripo landed fourth place in Flower Arrangement competition and bronze medalist during the 5th International Abilympics held in Prague, Czech Republic.

A polio victim, Agripo made it to the 5th International Abilympics being the gold medalist in Flower Arrangement during the Philippine National Skills Competition in 1999.

Also a polio victim, Arcala went with Tagalicud in New Delhi and got the 11th place in tailoring competition during the 5th International Abilympics.

He got amputated after meeting an accident, but Olegario will be representing the country to the 7th International Abilympics in Shizuoka, Japan in November to vie for cabinet-making.

The council approved yesterday the showcasing of their skills during the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week celebration of the province from July 17 to 23.

The activity seeks to promote recognition of skills of Dabaonons with disabilities that have significant contribution to business and economy locally and internationally.

Aside from giving them honor, the showcasing activity is also seen to inspire other PWDs with exceptional skills to surface and take part in local and international competitions. (PIA XI) [top]
