Education, a powerful medium for lasting peace in Mindanao - CMM

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (4 July) -- Center for Moderate Muslim Commissioner Taha M. Basman said that CMM and the Muslim community "believe that education and the right information on the true history of Mindanao is one very potent awareness program for a lasting peace in Mindanao."

"This is one of the advocacies of the Center for Moderate Muslim that is why we just had our campaign for scholarship program for our Muslim brothers in Mindanao in cooperation with UNESCO so that our Muslim communities will be equipped with adequate education and be able to raise up their potentials, Commissioner Basman said adding that "disunity among our people causes violence."

She said the Center for Moderate Muslim wants a lasting peace for Mindanao and are doing its best in pursing real peace in Mindanao.

ULAMA League of the Philippines regional chairman Aleem Mahmod Adilao, who has been coordinating with the scholarship program offered by CMM in cooperation with UNESCO, explained the importance of teaching the people the rich heritage and culture of the Muslim people, although deep and diverse as it may seem.

Aleem Adilao, in an ecumenical meeting with religious Muslim leaders and Muslim bishops at the Mini-forest park during the recent holding of scholarship examinations said peace-building is a day-to-day event and must start with the basic foundation of society - the family.

He also said that peace is an on-going process citing the role of media as a powerful vehicle in instilling peace and unity, the working press being the frontline services of day-to-day informal education.

In an interview with the Philippine Information Agency, Aleem Adilao said he hope that the CMM and UNESCO will sustain the scholarship program which will be of great help to their Muslim brothers in acquiring education and be fit for employment and lift up their way of living. (PIA XI) [top]
