PIA Press Release

President Arroyo re-opens Ozamiz Airport

by Babes J. Rebultan

Cagayan de Oro City (12 July) -- DESPITE a drizzle, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the re-opening of the Ozamiz City Airport this morning, July 11, in Barangay Gango, some three kilometers from the heart of the city.

In her brief speech, President Arroyo said the amount of P84 million was released from her presidential funds for the improvement and rehabilitation of the airport, which was idle for more than 12 years.

She thanked all concerned agencies, local government chief executives and 2nd District Rep. Herminia de Mesa-Ramiro for actively contributing to the completion of the airport project.

President Arroyo said with the re-opening of the airport, more business and investors would come to Ozamiz.

In her message, Rep. Ramiro said President Arroyo was instrumental in the funding and the re-opening of the Ozamiz Airport.

She said the airport remained idle for more than 12 years, adversely affecting the tourism industry and economy of the province as a whole.

Ramiro said President Arroyo will leave a legacy that will never be forgotten by the people, not only in Misamis Occidental, but also those in Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur.

For his part, Assistant Secretary Nilo Jatico of the Airport Transportation Office (ATO) announced that another P40 million is forthcoming within the budget year from Rep. Ramiro’s Countrywide Development Fund for the improvement of the terminal and its amenities.

Someday this could be a regional hub where flights from other countries within Asia Pacific can land here in Ozamiz City, he added.

Earlier, Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo O. Parojino.g Sr., in his welcome remarks, said the Misamisnon are genuinely thankful to the President for her avid support in the re-opening of the airport, especially the P84 million she allocated for its renovation.

Parojinog also said the Misamisnon will always support President Arroyo. (PIA-MisOrOccCam) [top]
