ASEAN spirit apparent even in sports competitions

Tacloban City (July 16) -- It is so heart-warming when people from various ASEAN countries converge in a friendly competition and cheer not only for their compatriots but anyone who deserve an applause.

The camaraderie and friendship pervading in a friendly international competition is a reflection that the seeds of unity and cooperation sown years back thru the organization of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Such was the atmosphere in the recently-concluded Malaysian First International Skimboarding Competition. Every athlete cheered for every rider and winner regardless of creed, color or nationality.

It is during such moments when one can truly feel the work of the ASEAN - moving as one, for the good of the ASEAN member nations, one ASEAN community jointly building up efforts, implementing the three pillars of ASEAN, security, economy and socio-cultural.

It appears that the efforts of the governments comprising the ASEAN are unconsciously being imbibed by their people. What could be the better way to demonstrate leadership by example!

The work of the ASEAN however is not yet over. A total of 27 countries will be represented at the 40th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs), and the 14th ASEAN Regular Forum (ARF) to be held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City from July 29 to Aug. 2, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to discuss the status of ASEAN's community building efforts and assess the progress of the implementation of the three pillars of ASEAN--on security community, economic community, and socio-cultural community.

The theme of the upcoming Manila meetings, is still "One Caring and Sharing Community," the theme that reflects the Philippines' commitment to ensure that ASEAN will remain an organization that cares for all its peoples, that places them at the center of the region's community building vision, that protects the environment and improves their quality of life, and that shares in both the efforts for and the benefits from greater regional integration and cooperation.

Methink, with the spirit of camaraderie and friendship pervading in the international sports competition, the efforts of ASEAN will not be in vain. (PIA 8) [top]
