PIA Press Release

Region 8 commemoration of nat'l crime prevention week kicks off today

Tacloban City (September 3) -- The commemoration of the National Crime Prevention Week in Region 8 takes off today, September 3, Department of Interior and Local Government Regional Office 8 Director William Paler announced.

Director Paler said that this year's activities will center on the theme Crime Prevention: A Global Concern with the slogan, "Mapayapang Pilipinas, Masaganang Bukas."

The theme, Director Paler informed, focuses on the global dimensions of crime and the need to strengthen multi-sectoral cooperation in the fight against international and domestic threats poised by terrorism, illicit drugs, firearms smuggling, human trafficking and all other forms of crime that adversely affect national peace and development efforts.

The kick off activity will commence with the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the Santo Nino Church at 7:00 o'clock in the morning, Director Paler informed.

This will be followed with a commemorative program at the Plaza Rizal fronting the Santo Nino Church. Police Chief Superintendent for Region 8, General Cabalquinto and Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez are expected to deliver their messages during the program.

After the program, a motorcade along the City's major thoroughfares will be conducted with the participation of the Regional Management Coordinating Committee headed by DILG and with Napolcom, Philippine National Police, PDEA, NBI, BDP, BJMP, DepEd and PIA as members, together with non government organizations and other stakeholders participating.

Director Paler stressed that the celebration of the National Crime Prevention Week focuses on the prime concern of the government, that of reducing all forms of criminality. The entire world condemns illegal acts that hamper development and destroy the sanctity of human life, he said.

The observance of the 13th National Crime Prevention Week is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 461 dated August 31, 1994, declaring the first week of September of every year as the National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW). (PIA 8) [top]
