Davao City (6 September) -- Davao City is joining the Software Freedom Day Celebration this month.
Holden Hao of DabaweGNU said the event is held every third Saturday of September which is an international celebration that attempts to correct the imbalance by making more people aware of the availability of free software.
Already on its third year, he said the Software Freedom Day is celebrated in over 60 countries.
Free software, Hao said, allows people to do the same things they do with commercial proprietary software which include free operating systems, free office productivity suites, free graphics editing software, free business applications and free games.
Davao City's participation will be highlighted with lectures, tutorials and free software demonstrations at the University of Southeastern Philippines on September 15, 2007.
Main lectures will start at 1:30 PM but demonstrations will be available from 10:00 AM onwards.
He said free software for Linux, Windows, and Mac will be given during the event but because of limited CDs, visitors are advised to bring their USB flash drives for copying the software.
The Software Freedom Davay 2007 activities in Davao are sponsored by University of Southeastern Philippines Institute of Computing, DabaweGNU, Inc. USEP FOSS Club, and Davao Union Drug.
Hao said access to computers should be made universally available and no organization should have a monopoly from its use.
"But despite PC hardware cost coming down to commodity appliance levels, their use and distribution are strictly controlled under pain of heavy legal penalties," he said.
He said with computers now an integral part of everyday living of people, it is imperative to have software freedom.
He encouraged interested parties to check htt[://www.minfoss,info for more information of the Software Freedom Day. (PIA XI) [top]
