Commentary: September 12 is national day of prayer for peace and reconciliation

Tacloban City (September 12) -- September 12 has been declared by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as a National Day of Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation of our Nation through Presidential Proclamation No. 1362 signed by President Arroyo on August 15, 2007.

It would be recalled that last year, the President declared September 12 as the National Day of Prayer, Reparation and Consecration of our Nation in order to make affirmation of our commitment to promote the attainment of this goal, through personal reflection, change in attitudes, and solidarity for the public welfare and the development of our country.

This year the same day September 12 has been declared as a National Day of Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation in order to underscore the fact that the promotion of peace and unity among the Filipino people remains to be one of the highest goals of the government.

This goal has all too often lost its relevance in our nation which is beset by hostility, bitterness, constant conflict and too much politics which slow down development and economic growth.

Another reason which prompted the President to issue the Proclamation is the fact that the country is facing several challenges which require the steadfast devotion of every Filipino to work for the common good and for the betterment of our country.

There are issues which promote divisiveness among the Filipino people and there are differences in ideologies which hinder the total unification of the Filipino nation. Take the case of the elusive attainment of lasting peace in Mindanao which has already been the cause of the lost of many lives and tears of many orphaned families.

Being truly the steadfast and dedicated the President is as the leader of the country, the President deemed it best that a day of prayer for peace and reconciliation may serve to promote the attainment of our national goal. (PIA 8) [top]
