PIA Press Release

Candidates for barangay, SK elections may campaign only 7 days before October 29 elections

Tacloban City (September 12) -- Those who filed their certificates of candidacy for the October 29 synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections are only allowed to campaign seven days before the election day.

This was clarified by Comelec Region 8 Director Adolfo Ibaņez who said that even if the candidates have filed their certificate of candidacy on September 14 or the on the deadline for filing which is September 19, they can only start campaigning on October 21 to October 27.

Director Ibaņez said that the concerned people who are considering for any position in the synchronized barangay or sk elections must observe this campaign period or they will face disqualification.

Director Ibanez also stressed that the synchronized barangay and sk elections are non-partisan elections and the candidates will not belong to any political party.

Director Ibaņez said that the officials to be elected in each barangay are the Punong Barangay and seven (7) Sangguniang Barangay Kagawad.

For the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, the officials to be elected are one SK Chairman and seven (7) Sangguniang Kabataan Kagawad.

Director Ibaņez reminded that no person shall be eligible to run for more than one office, that is Punong Barangay and Barangay Kagawad. If he files for more than one office, he shall not be eligible for any one of them.

However, before the deadline for the filing of certificate of candidacy, the person who has filed a certificate of candidacy for more than one office may declare under oath the office for which he desires to be elected and cancel the certificate of candidacy for the other office.

Certificates of Candidacy may be obtained for free from the Local Election Officers in the cities and municipalities where they reside and intend to run, Director Ibaņez concluded. (PIA 8) [top]
