Forum on child labor slated today
By Bong Pedalino
LILOAN, Southern Leyte (18 September) -- A one-day, inter-agency forum is scheduled to be held here today to discuss concerns and issues affecting child labor.
Spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the whole-day activity aims for the mutual formation of "Sagip Batang Manggagawa Quick Action Team (SBMQAT)".
Among other objectives, the SBMQAT attempts to enforce sanctions on violations of anti-child labor laws, including Republic Act 9208, or Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, and other related laws on children's welfare.
In his letter to the respective partner agencies, Forter Puguon, DOLE Regional Director, stated that one of the ways to prevent the prevalence of victims of child abuse is to enlist the services of concerned government agencies, including the private sector, to help in tracking and monitoring child-related situations.
"And so one of the strategies adopted is to converge the services of partner agencies to protect, rescue, and reintegrate children from abusive and exploitative work conditions," Puguon said.
Because the ferry terminal is located in the municipality, the town of Liloan becomes a transit point for actual and potential victims of trafficking and other forms of child abuse, traveling from Mindanao to Manila and vice versa. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
