Food packaging and techo support viewed in DOST SET-UP products

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (29 September) -- TECHONOLOGY support and the works of scientists in food packaging has turned the ballroom of the Royal Mandaya Hotel into a beautiful exhibit of different products either produced, manufactured or invented through the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Mindanao Cluster.

This is the site to behold if you are a believer in Mindanao's agricultural science right at the main entrance of one of Davao City's busiest hotels which is the venue of the DOST Mindanao Cluster Performance Review and the exhibit of SETUP Products during the Ribbon Cutting and Opening of Exhibits attended by top officials of DOST and the SETUP Graduates in foods packaging, Coco crafts, tissue culture project, Banana chips and even pastel production.

Colorful Coco fiber products, Handicrafts and novelty items go with the display of Bignay wines and delectable food items in bottle like the durian which is currently in abundance with the bumper harvest in Davao City.

One of the DOST-supported project like the Emerald Durian Palace is producing tarts, pastilles, pie, even empanada, hopia, polvoron and jam out of the lowly but luscious durian.

SETUP is a specially designed program to help Mindanao scientists and food producers in storing and producing viable businesses for their various products, according to DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro during the press forum portion organized by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA XI) for the Sept, 28-30 DOST Mindanao Cluster Performance Review and Exhibit.

The Opening ceremony also included the launching of the Web-based GIS Mapping of SET-UP and the testimonies and modest success stories of SETUP awardees and the awarding of SETUP graduates from the fishworkers multi-purpose cooperatives to furnitures shops and marketing.

One of those who came to give his testimony is Dr. Edgar Ignacio, professor of chemistry and president of the Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST) of Butuan City. He said the tissue culture of abaca seedlings in his laboratory is now producing 130-T seedlings a month from the technology shared by DOST through the SETUP program. (PIA XI) [top]
