Davao region all set for barangay elections

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (3 October) -- Despite the long debates in the lower house regarding the schedule of the coming barangay elections, Davao Region is all set for the said elections.

" Though we were only given a limited time to prepare since the May 2004 elections, our region is ready to conduct the Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan Elections on October 29", election officer Febe Barlaan said.

The coming elections is expected to push through despite strong attempts of the 14th Congress to reset the Barangay and SK elections instead to May 2008. Reason for doing so is for the said elections to be the venue for trial of the computerization of elections.

Barlaan admitted that there are apprehension on the part of would-be candidates in filing for their certificate of candidacy after hearing talks about the postponement of the elections.

"But so far, barangay candidates are still very active in filing for their COC. We kept on telling them that the movements in the congress as well as the controversy involving then COMELEC chair will not affect or change the schedule of the elections."

Election volunteers are working overtime in the past few months. " We are not getting any pay for our overtime work," Barlaan stressed.

However, she urged the local government units to be supportive especially in providing a counterpart help as incentives to the volunteer workers.

She added that the Comelec can still go about its operation even without the financial counterpart of the LGUs. However, any help from the local government is very much appreciated.

In the case of workers under job order in Davao city, the Comelec has settled the issue convincing the local government to shoulder the pay of 52 workers.

Barlaan also announced that the needed documents as part of the preparation are already in place which includes the list of voters. (PIA XI) [top]
