BJMP girds for barangay/SK election duties

LEGAZPI CITY (15 October) -- Along with other law enforcement agencies of the government, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was deputized anew by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to perform duties relative to the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on October 29, 2007.

Under COMELEC Resolution No. 8277, members and officers of the BJMP are designated as deputies of the Commission to enforce the provisions of the Omnibus Election Code, particularly that of Sec. 261. The provision categorically state that wardens and jail officers are required by law to safe keep inmates in their custody, and are prohibited from illegally ordering or allowing any inmate/inmates detained in the city, district and municipal jails to leave the premises thereof sixty days before and thirty days after the election.

BJMP Bicol regional director Jail Sr. Sup't Egmedio R. Callos has started exerting all the necessary efforts to make sure that in the event the election pushes through the bureau is prepared to perform their duty as mandated.

Callos said that during the election period members and officers of the BJMP are also prohibited from bearing, carrying, transporting of firearms outside the immediate vicinity of their place of work (offices/jail facilities) during the election period from September 29 to November 13, 2007.

Callos led personnel of RBJMP5 in expressing full support to the effort of the COMELEC for a free, orderly, honest, peaceful and credible election. (BJMP RO5 CRS/PIA) [top]
