Sorsogon celebrates Kasanggayahan Festival 2007

Sorsogon City (October 17) -- Kasanggayahan Festival formally reels off today, October 17, with high hopes, optimism, and constant prayers for "a life of prosperity" in every Sorsoganon in the wake of the hard times Sorsogon has been into following the spate of natural calamities that devastated this province during the past twelve months.
Today, Sorsogon also commemorates its 113th anniversary as separate province from Albay.
Msgr. Francisco P. Monje, chair of the Kasanggayahan Foundation, Inc., said "this annual provincial festivities demonstrate anew the Sorsoganons profound gratitude to God for His unrelenting guidance and blessings that we were able to surpass these trials and move on pursuing our aspirations and dreams for the province."
"The commemoration of the two-week festival is aimed at inculcating awareness among our people of the richness of our culture and heritage, our products and skills local crafts, cuisines, tourism and peoples, among others," he added.
The Kasanggayahan Foundation, Inc., Provincial Government of Sorsogon, LGUs, national government line agencies, non-government organizations, private institutions and individuals have committed to chip in their time, talent and some financial assistance to ensure a simple yet meaningful celebration.
Kasanggayahan Festival 2007 emphasizes anew the significance of multi-sectoral events to encourage more support and participation of the different sectors of the community in the province and to illustrate that the festival is a real people's event.
The festival had already a soft opening October 10 with the PCSO-PIA "Walang Kupas" road show highlighted by a dental and medical mission benefiting thousands of local residents, as well as night time entertainment featuring the JC Radio Band and the comic duo of "Kiray and Rommel".
The 113th provincial anniversary will be commemorated with the celebration of a Thanksgiving Mass, then the Grand Opening Ceremonies at the provincial capitol grounds.
DTI Sorsogon Provincial Office, along with the Sorsogon Producers Association, will also formally open the Trade Fair and Exhibits afterwards, also at the provincial capitol grounds.
Dubbed as "festival of festivals" in the province, Kasanggayahan Festival 2007 will congregate anew the Sorsogon City and municipal festivals of in one festive historico-cultural parade in Sorsogon City's main thoroughfares.
Other activities lined-up for the entire stretch of the Kasanggayahan Festival include sports fest, literary contests, food preparation and cooking demo, cultural presentation, nightly concerts and entertainments, business forum, jobs fair, fellowships and recognitions nights, and the 6th Heritage Lectures.
Meanwhile, at least a hundred dancers comprised mostly of public school teachers from across the province, several government offices, and private institutions are expected to join the famous purely-Sorsoganon wedding dance "pantomina sa tinampo" along Sorsogon City's main thoroughfares on October 26.
Governor Sally A. Lee earlier issued Executive Order 04-2007 declaring October 17 as special non-working holiday in the province and enjoining government officials and employees to actively participate in all the activities of the Kasanggayahan Festival 2007. (PIA Sorsogon) [top]
