PNP all set for barangay elections

Davao City (25 October) -- The Philippine National Police Police Regional Office XI (PNP-PRO XI) is all set for the coming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections this coming October 29.

According to PRO Director Chief Supt. Andres Caro the Police together with the military have now been deputized by the Commission on Elections per Resolution 833 to secure the conduct of honest, clean and peaceful barangay elections. During the 2007 National and Local elections the Armed Forces was bared from directly participating in poll security.

According to Caro, the police and the military will be securing about 1,415 polling places with about 10,736 precincts. He said there are closely watching at 470 barangays which are areas of immediate concern.

Caro also said that about 62 peace covenants have been signed in different barangays in the region, which would prevent the outbreak of violence and untoward election-related incidents.

The PRO XI chief said that checkpoints are in place to enforce the gun ban which already has apprehended 25 violators. He said come Election Day there will be realignment of forces to secure polling places and precincts in the barangays.

"We assure you that your police is doing everything to have an orderly and peaceful elections," Chief Supt. Caro said.

Aside from the Barangay and SK elections the police and military has also to contend various threats like the aftermath of the recent Glorietta explosion, although indicators point to industrial failure, authorities has not discounted the incident as an act of terror.

According to Caro, immediately after the Glorietta explosion the Police in the region was put on full alert (moderate terror alert). He also said that they receive information that terrorists are planning to mar the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) conference and disturb the barangay elections.

Caro said that they are implementing security measures to harden the region against these terrorists. Caro said that despite different security concerns like the terror alert, the security for the BIMP EAGA Meet and the barangay elections the security posture is holding in the region.

This is anticipated, we have put security measures in place. After the barangay elections, the PRO XI will also be busy securing the region during the celebration of all souls day where elements and units of the PNP again will be realigned to places of convergence like bus terminals, airports, seaports and cemeteries.
