Roxas City (15 November) -- A ceremonial mangrove tree planting will highlight the launching ceremony of greening mangrove and coastal zone areas of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on November 16 at Barangay Balaring in Ivisan town to officially kick off its mangrove reforestation in various areas of the province in view of the government's Green Philippines Program (GPP).
"The participants during the activity will be encouraged to sign a GPP covenant to commit themselves to support the program," said DENR Capiz Forest Management Services Chief Edwin Borja.
Among those expected to attend the activity are Capiz Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr., Ivisan town mayor Felipe Yap, DENR Regional Executive Director Lormelyn E. Claudio, and other provincial and municipal officials, among others.
"The activity is part of a series of launching activities based on the GPP's four thematic areas," Borja explained.
The DENR – Capiz also launched a tree planting activity on critical watershed, protected areas, protection forest and open lands in Dumarao town last August 25; agro-forestry as well as community-based forest management areas in Barangay Agcagay, Jamindan on September 28; and greening urban areas in Barangay Bato, Roxas City last month.
GPP is part of the government's eight point priority agenda dubbed "8 by '08" that will fast-track the reforestation efforts and the country's initial contribution to combat global warming. (PIA) [top]
