Phil-Aus BEAM aims to achieve peace in Mindanao
By Rose B. Palacio
Davao City (21 November) -- The Philippine-Australia Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) project aims to contribute to the attainment of peace and development in Southern Philippines.
To achieve this goal, BEAM has included Education for Peace among its initiatives. The education for peace is about the critical understanding of the root causes of conflicts, violence and the absence of peace at all levels.
It is also about promoting the culture of peace which is not just about the absence of physical violence and war or the surrender of one's rights, quest for justice, or redress of governance. Rather it is about addressing these issues and their root causes in active and non-violent ways.
BEAM believes that education plays a critical role in sowing the seeds of the culture of peace by cultivating values and attitudes in the school community that encourages individual and social action for building more peaceful families, communities and ultimately a more peaceful Mindanao.
One of the activities undertaken to realize the culture of peace integration in BEAM was the inclusion of sessions on education for peace in the materials development write shops for the participants to comprehend clearly the dynamics of peace issues and learn to further probe peace issues as they happen in the certain community.
