Statement of the President
Malacanang, Manila, 1 December
The situation in the nation is calm and secure. The curfew has been lifted and the people are going about their business as usual. The city, and indeed the entire nation, is functioning normally.
The Philippine people should take comfort that the institutions of government and civil society are strong and resilient. Government is protecting the people and providing stability and order.
The rule of law has prevailed. The transgressors will not hold this nation hostage with impunity. They will be punished to the full extent of the law. Justice shall be served and the interests of the people upheld.
It is clear that the actions of these few desperate men reveal just how out of touch they are with the hopes and dreams of the average Filipino. Filipinos want political stability, a bright economic future and social justice. The actions of these misguided men undermine each and every one of the genuine aspirations of real Filipinos. Instead of working to bring the nation together by working within our democratic process, their actions merely are fuel for selfish motives for personal gain.
Since when is promoting violence, undermining the constitution and destruction of property an act of patriotism? Since when do Filipinos embrace anarchy, promote chaos and advance instability? Never is the answer which is why these lone wolves have misunderstood the wisdom and faith of the Philippine people.
The action of these desperados is even more disheartening at a time when our nation has made a great leap forward for the first time in a generation. Yet once again the silent heroes are the hardworking, patriotic and dedicated Filipinos who have turned away from this extreme nonsense. Filipinos want to hear hope, not fear, and the sound from these adventurers was nothing but noise signifying nothing.
I am a fervent believer in press freedom and the rule of law and regret that police procedures became a problem for media, even for a few hours. I ordered the police to expedite the processing and release of media as soon as possible.
I am not deterred in fulfilling the obligations of my office, including my continuing efforts to build up Philippine foreign policy to better our people. As such, it is with complete confidence that I will travel to Europe to advance our national interests in meetings with the business and government leaders in Spain and England. I will once again promote the Philippines to foreign investors who have been investing heavily in our nation and creating jobs and economic opportunity for our people.
Let us focus on the future and what we can build together. (PIA) [top]
