Leyte gov exhorts Region 8 media to renew commitment to responsible journalism

Tacloban City (December 4) -- Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla urged the officers and members of the Eastern Visayas Tri-Media Association, Inc. to be true to their profession and to serve the people to the best of their abilities.

Governor Petilla made the call during the 3rd Induction of Officers of the Eastern Visayas Tri-Media Association held at the SMED Center on November 27, 2007, where his message was read by Provincial Legal Officer Imelda Nartea.

Governor Petilla said he always look forward to opportunities where he gets to establish a deeper bond with members of the tri-media. This, he said, is because he has always believed that public officials and media people share a common objective, that is, to provide public service.

Governor Petilla who has always been known for his innovative programs for all sectors of society, believes in the importance of focusing on promoting a culture of excellence in the various professions.

Intrinsic in the culture of excellence is the maintenance of professional integrity by ensuring that in the course of one professional practice, there is always that awareness that one's profession is imbued with public interest.

Even as he congratulated the outgoing officers for their good work of keeping the organization alive during their incumbency, Governor Petilla said that the members should look at the occasion as an opportunity to look back and celebrate their association's collective gains for the past year and to give themselves the much-needed pat in the back for having been true to their association and their profession.

Governor Petilla added that the occasion serves as an opportunity not only for the new set of officers but also all the members to renew their commitment to better serve the people of Region 8 by practicing responsible journalism so that in the end, they will all have a share in the great challenge of nation-building through their honest and dedicated service to the people.

The new set of officers is headed by Mr. Rene Amano of the Tacloban Start weekly newspaper. (PIA 8) [top]
