"Basura Mo, Liwanag ng Pasko" celebrated in Kapalong

Davao City (4 December) -- "Basura Mo, Liwanag ng Pasko" is the theme of the government-private partnership Light a Tree Program, and Inter-school Lantern contest. The ceremonial synchronized lighting was officiated by Mayor Edgardo L. Timbol last December 1, 2007 at 6:00 o'clock in the evening at the Municipal Government Park and Freedom Plaza, Kapalong, Davao del Norte.

Waste re-use material is the primary guideline in designing Christmas decors and lanterns that will highlight the trees and lanterns except for the Christmas lights. Kapalongnians amazing creativity is showcased around the trees. The decors are clearly visible during day and night.

The "Light a Tree" program is clustered into two sectors, the government sector and private partners sector. The government sector consists of 18 local and national government offices were assigned to adorn trees within in the municipal government compound park, while the 15 private sectors adorn tress within in Freedom Park, here.

Mayor Timbol expressed his appreciation on the support of the government offices and private sector for their participation in making the Kapalongnians Christmas bright and happy.

This "Basura mo, Liwanag sa Pasko" has come into a plan for Christmas program in support to the solid waste management program of the LGU that there is more we can do with our waste materials, Timbol added during his partner's forum.

Creative designs of Christmas decors were made out of tires, plastic containers, tubes, banana leaves, coconut husk, wrapping cellophane, cd's, advertising laminated papers, mahogany, syringes, boxes, brooms and other waste materials.

In the inter-school lantern contest, all private and public high schools and colleges operating in Kapalong will compete with a minimum of two lantern entries per school. The criteria for judging are waste materials used is 40%, creativity/product quality is 30% and lighting effects is 30% for a total of 100%.

Lantern entries were hanged in the Freedom Stage covered bleacher.

The Light a Tree Program and Inter-school lantern contest starts on December 1 and will end on December 31, 2007 for the awarding ceremony. (MIO/PIA 11) [top]
