Isabela town mayor boasts San Mateo awards, achievements
SAN MATEO, Isabela (February 4) -- The local chief executive of this multi-awarded southwestern town took pride for the achievements and awards that brought San Mateo attain development and progress among its constituents.
Mayor Roberto Agcaoili said that his town is a two-time national champion in Eco-Solid Waste Management, the top producer of rice in the entire Cagayan Valley region and now an Agro-Ecological Destination.
Mayor Agcaoili said that San Mateo is a favorite destination of the people especially rice farmers from Kalinga, Ifugao, Baguio, Cagayan, Nueva Ecija and other nearby agricultural provinces in order to buy certified palay and mongo seeds produced by San Mateo farmers.
"Mongo and palay farming in San Mateo are the primary sources of income among farmers" said Mayor Agcaoili.
"Mongo farming is an alternative source of income of farmers here after palay harvest season, because it brings big profit to farmers, and aside from that, it also creates jobs to the constituents", Agcaoili added.
Aside from rice and corn farming, San Mateo people are also engage in fish farming and poultry and duck raising which mayor Agcaoili is pushing for more production.
He said that the presence of national government offices (Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), (Dep't of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), Isabela State University (ISU) San Mateo Campus, National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and other agencies based here are the key players that brought this municipality into an Agro-Ecological Destination in Cagayan Valley region.
