Music mania hits Tagum City
By Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (8 February) -- The music fever is hitting Tagum City with Mayor Rey T. Uy himself leading the band.
This is the RTU-led band of unity of course upholding the very rights of children to participate and develop their inborn talents in music and other colorful and culturally-situated aspirations of the all-around "Musikahan Sa Tagum" set on another full blast regaling of the eyes and the ears starting February 21 and six days onwards in different venues..
Even peaceful Davao City was roused by the frenzied musically-inclined preparations as tourism officials of Tagum led by Mrs. Alma Uy, Vice-Mayor Allan Rellon, Councilor De Carlo "Oyo" Uy and DOT Region XI Director Sonia Garcia graced the Press Grand Launch held Wednesday at Davao City's own musical turf, the MTS - Matina Town Square.
The press launch had begun with the touch of angelic music or the "language of the soul" as Director Garcia had mentioned with sparkling eyes in the press forum.
The non-parochial musical doxology before the nationalistic "Lupang Hinirang" was a soulful rendition of the latest version of "Our Father" by the well-trained, poised children's choir of the 10-year old city.
You name it, the RTU music makers have it. Be it the indigenous regal rondalla or the homegrown cultural dances in aeta or bagobo-inspired garb and scintillating dances of the majorettes in a drumbeating stomp at the park.
One interesting mix of the weeklong musical affair is the Pasiklaban: Battle of the Bands in acoustic, Bossa Nova and Folk which will be conducted ahead of the Avenida Musika of the marching brass band, the Himig Handog children chorale, the reggae and many more.
Located some 50 kilometers hie off to the unfolding musical extravaganza, Tagum which is creating the image of a prime travel and investment destination is reachable by well-paved roads all the way from Davao City.
Their legislative agenda is also musically-inclined as Vice-Mayor Rellon and Councilor Oyo Uy team up to work on a city ordinance institutionalizing Tagum City as the reverberating music capital of the Philippines.
The music mania is really all-around, even their Barangay Pandesal is shaped like a guitar stuffed with the delectable durian processed by the Emerald Durian Palace of Apokon. (PIA XI) [top]
