PGMA leads ground-breaking of P1.5 B Talaingod-Valencia road

Davao City (9 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo led the groundbreaking ceremony of the P1.5 billion 85 kilometers Talaingod, Davao del Norte-Valencia, Bukidnon Road.

The ceremony took place at barangay Tiburcia, Maniki, Kapalong, Davao del Norte in the presence of the residents both of Kapalong and Talaingod municipalities and graced by private leaders, government officials, and cabinet secretaries on Friday, February 8.

The road section in Kapalong town will connect the Talaingod, Davao del Norte-Valencia, Bukinon Road to the existing national and provincial roads leading to other parts of the region.

The President said the opening of the road network opens up more economic activities.

The road will traverse mostly banana plantations and the President noted that new investments are expected to come in.

She said the banana industry before was dying but now it is very much alive saying that 70 percent of the bananas goes to Japan while the some of the produce goes to China and the Middle East.

The road network falls under the Mindanao Super Region projects.

The Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco) status report as of January 2008 showed that the detailed engineering was undertaken by DPWH Regions X and XI from July 2007 to December 2007 and construction of civil works is slated from August 2008 to April 2010.

An amount of P56 million was allocated for the Improvement/Concreting of Kapalong-Talaingod Road under the 2007 Regular Infrastructure which is being undertaken by the Region XI of DPWH and an actual accomplishment of 37 percent was achieved as of April 5, 2007.

Another P10 million was allocated for the improvement/concreting of T-A-K-S-T-D-P Circumferential Road, Talaingod Section under the 2007 Regular Infrastructure which being undertaken by the Davao del Norte district engineering office. It has an actual accomplishment of 85 percent.

The remaining unpaved section of 72.42 km up to the boundary of Regions XI and X shall be programmed for implementation until 2010.

This project was one of the President's commitment in her State of the Nation Address. (PIA) [top]
