Mindanao's grandest music festival unfolds in Tagum

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (9 February) -- TOP officials of the City of Tagum Tourism Council headed by their chairperson Mrs. Alma Uy are not asking too much in getting a share of the proverbial pie of the domestic tourism economy.

The group has been working very hard and expanding its creativity to attract more visitors to this cultured-crabs, banana and durian producing agricultural city and one of the newest to have attained cityhood status just a few years ahead of Mati City further east in Davao Oriental.

This month, the city banners a musical and cultural extravaganza which tourism officials assert with confidence as the grandest music festival in Mindanao.

At the sound of the marching brass band, the "Musikahan" blasts off to a rousing start at 4 o'clock pm on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the city's Freedom Park. This will be followed four hours later by the RTU Concert, a mixture of musical presentations, so named after the initials of the city's audacious Mayor Rey T. Uy.

The Raprapan, Pasiklaban, Kasikas sa Dalan, Rondalsayaw with the colorful thematic float parade and many more musical creations follow in the weeklong event.

Despite Tagum's well orchestrated preparations coupled with the unstinting unity and support of its own people, the tourism council gave a very modest expectation of its hard work and ROIs (Return Of Investment).

Davao City, which owns two of the main port of entries in Mindanao will benefit from the success of tourism-related activities of its neighbor LGUs particularly Tagum, according to Alma Lim Uy.

Using a modest mathematical equation, the tourism council chairperson said that when a visitor lands or arrives in Davao City and spends P100, Tagum as his next destination will be happy if he spends another P50.

Even if each visitor just spend that much in Tagum that will be of help to our economy, she added.

The mayor's wife also expressed appreciation over the increasing support of the private sector lead this year by Phoenix (Fuels Life) as the major sponsor.

The Tagum Agricultural Development Company (Tadeco), the Provincial Government of Compostela Valley and Congressman Antonio F. Lagdameo are three of the more prominent sponsors together with San Miguel Beer and 35 other agro-industrial benefactors.

Tagum, a component city of Davao del Norte, currently under the stewardship of Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, is located northeasterly and reachable by well-paved roads and serviced by air-conditioned buses of the Davao Reyer Transport Services, Inc., Davao Metro Shuttle Corporation and the Davao Oriental-bound Bachelor Express, Incorporated.

The place is less than an hour's drive from Davao City's main port of entries. Three hours from Butuan City, its nearest neighbor city outside of the Davao Region.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's groundbreaking of the Tagum-Kapalong-Talaingod-Valencia,Bukidnon road Friday augurs well to a more improved domestic travel connections Mindanaowide.

Tagum will be a major beneficiary as the road is expected to cut travel time by three hours from Cagayan de Oro City, the main economic hub of Northern Mindanao.(PIA XI) [top]
