Sec Ebdane mobilizes Mindanao engineering offices

Davao City (13 February) -- Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secrerary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. has ordered the inspection of bridges and other infrastructure projects in Mindanao following an order from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for concerned government agencies to be prepared in any disaster of calamity.

Secretary Ebdane, together with USEC Rafael Yabut and Regional Director Jerome dela Rosa were among the officials who were with the President's entourage during the groundbreaking of Kapalong-Talaingod-Valencia, Bukidnon road Friday (Feb 8) in Kapalong, Davao del Norte. Also present were: Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, Congressman Anton Lagdameo, Kapalong and Talaingod Mayors Edgardo Timbol and Pilar Libayao and other officials.

Secretary Ebdane instructed all regional and district engineering offices in Mindanao region to conduct thorough assessment and inspection of piers, column and girder of bridges and if necessary mobilized emergency repair team to ensure the safety of the public.

In Davao region, DPWH XI Director dela Rosa said the regional office has been closely coordinating with local government units (LGUs) in checking school buildings, bridges and other infrastructure in their own jurisdiction to keep the people away from harm especially during a calamity.

Director dela Rosa said he also instructed his men to make sure that national roads and highways are safe and passable at all times for smooth public transport.

Meanwhile, the USEC Yabut, in his description to the President relative to the Php 1.6-billion Kapalong-Talaingod Boundary-Valencia, Bukidnon road improvement said the concreting has a length of 58.1 kilometers that stretches from Kapalong to the boundary of San Fernando, Bukidnon which will form part of the inter-regional link connecting two of the country's major arterial roads: the Pan-Philippine Highway (Davao-Agusan road) in region eleven and the Sayre Highway in Bukidnon, region ten.

The new route will serve as an alternate road to the Davao-Calinan-Bukidnon road and Agusan road (Daang Maharlika), providing a time and distance-saving option to the public traveling between the two provinces, including those from Davao Oriental and southern area of Agusan del Sur and their environs.
