DPWH to Bankerohan bridge contractor: Make ongoing work pace with set target

By Rose Palacio

Davao City (19 February) -- The ongoing total restoration of the Generoso Bridge in Bankerohan would be "at pace with set target" of its project implementation was strictly instructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. and USEC Rafael Yabut for Mindanao operations to Ciriaco Construction Corporation.

The instruction of Secretary Ebdane to Ciriaco Construction is in consonance of the President's order to hasten and fast-track total rehabilitation of Generoso Bridge in Bankerohan in line with government's campaign to improve people's lives in the countrysides by facilitating faster flow and movement of people goods and services.

DPWH XI Director Jerome dela Rosa, in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency said the regional office of DPWH has been closely monitoring the bridge construction as its full supervision emanates at the DPWH central office. Generoso Bridge is a vital instrument to mainstream communities and enable government to "provide services where they are most needed," he said.

The Arroyo Administration is vigorously pursuing full physical integration through infrastructure development, as one of the key development strategies for Mindanao region.

Infrastructure improvement is an integral component in development efforts that "figuratively and literally pave the way for other programs to reach the grassroots," he said.

For the Generoso Bridge in Bankerohan, the Ciriaco Construction has committed to finish the bridge on or before its set date of completion (by August 14, 2008). Based on the January 14, 2008 effectivity of the contract between the government and Ciriaco Construction Corporation, the bridge must be completed within 210 calendar days.

With funds made available, and complete construction equipment facilities and materials at hand, there are signs in which the completion will be happening soon.

The national government has allocated P206,648,492.00 for the total restoration of the bridge.

In an earlier interview with Davao City Traffic czar Celso Gempesaw, the latter said that Generoso bridge was constructed 58 years ago as it replaced the wooden bridge destroyed by the Japanese Army during the World War ll. Generoso bridge was rendered impassable last April 2007 when one of its posts broke down, weakening its structure.

Gempesaw said its closure since April last year has led to severe traffic congestion with the other (only) adjacent bridge absorbing a two-day traffic. (PIA) [top]
