Feature: Tagum mayor to show LGUs way of public service

by JMD Abangan

Tagum City, Davao del Norte (19 February) -- Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy wanted to show local government's way of dedication to public service in the midst of a corruption expose' over the scrapped broadband deal.

During the ground-breaking ceremony for the P200-million new Tagum City Hall, Uy urged fellow government workers to show that local government officials here have stayed allegiance to public service.

"In spite of the scandals, naa pa gihapon ang LGU(s) nag-tan-aw pa gihapon sa mga tawo. Atong ipakita nga kita diri but-an pa gihapon." (There are still LGUs which are looking after the welfare of people. We have to show them that we have remained faithful) he said, referring to fresh broadband deal expose' of Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada.

"I-prove nato sa ilaha nga kita diri sa Tagum, naa sa padayong panerbisyo sa katawhan. (Let us prove to them that we, in Tagum, have continued serving the public.)," he said.

Lozada lately testified before the Senate of the massive bribery in transacting the $329 million broadband project which was scrapped by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo when it got riddled with controversies.

Lozada has tried to link the President to the scam that has spawned protest rallies in some urban centers in the country, calling for the Arroyo's resignation.

But San Beda College dean of the Graduate School, Fr. Ranhilio Callangan Aquino said he "fails to see the connection between Mr. Lozada's statement and what I consider precipitous calls for the President's resignation."

Meanwhile, Uy wanted the New City Hall be constructed through administration, meaning the city government takes responsibility of putting up the building.

He said he would be saving a much as P60 million which could possibly be lost to the standard pay-offs and kickbacks when done through contract.

Standing on the 15-hectare donated land from Jesus V. Ayala, the new Tagum City Hall is expected to be inaugurated and opened on September 09, 2009. (PIA) [top]
