DOLE urges youth to be agents of change
Iloilo City (21 February) -- "We want the youth to become agents of change", said Engr. Filomeno Sonza, Head of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Iloilo Guimaras Provincial Office.
Speaking at the "Working Youth Day" with Info-Cum Productivity Forum held at the University of Iloilo Auditorium last February 19, Sonza cited that the youth can become effective partners in the government's drive to eliminate child labor in its worst form.
"They can help us influence the mind set of young people in their desire to earn for a living", he added.
He said the DOLE and its partners are doing their jobs in curbing the proliferation of child labor in Iloilo and Guimaras and at the same time improving the lives of the youth by providing jobs and skills training which they could use in starting up their livelihood projects.
Sonza disclosed that members of working youth organizations are among the beneficiaries of the "Dagdag-Kabuhayan para sa Manggagawa", a newly-launched program of the DOLE aimed to assist workers in the formal sector in engaging business that would provide them additional income and employment for their family members.
DOLE 6 LEO III and Acting Information Officer Amalia Judicpa reported that the one-day event was spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in line with Presidential Proclamation No. 1110, series of 1973 which declared February 15 of every year as "Working Youth Day".
Judicpa said several young people from various youth organizations in Iloilo and Guimaras participated in the event. Most of these youth are actively supporting the community development extension programs of the University of Iloilo and Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST).
Topics discussed during the forum are geared towards developing the youth awareness on issues and concerns confronting them, such as employment of minors, reproductive health and drug addiction as well as on entrepreneurship.
"No to Child, Yes to Youth Improvement," is the theme of this year's celebration that speaks well of the efforts being undertaken by DOLE and its partners. (PIA) [top]
