DPWH reports initial P20-M damages to roads, bridges in Leyte

Tacloban City (February 25) -- Initial reports from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 8 showed that the province of Leyte needs at least P20 Million to repair the damages to seven roads and bridges in the province, brought about by floods due to continuous rains in the Region.

This amount may yet increase once all the reports have been gathered. When President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to Tacloban on February 23, Governor Petilla intimated that the flood waters have not subsided in some parts of the province. He added that in some areas like San Miguel town, the flood waters were neck-high.

This is the reason why the Governor and the Provincial Rescue and Relief Team had to go to the barangays and not call the people to the town proper, to get their relief goods.

Among the damaged roads and bridges is Barangay Hinugayan in Barugo where the slopes protection collapsed and the estimated amount needed for repair amounts to P4 Million.

Another is the Palo-San Antonio Road at Barangay Canhumbang in Palo town, where a washed out section will require P3 Million budget for repairs.

Funding in the amount of P1 Million is needed to repair the washed out bridge approach at Barangay Barasan in La Paz town. Another P2 Million is needed for the damaged bridge approach at Barangay Piliway, also in La Paz.

P4 Million budget is needed to rehabilitate the washed out culvert and the road damages caused by landslide accross the road at Barangay Sangputang in Babatngon town.

Another P4 Million is needed for the repair and rehabilitation of the modular bridge approach at Barangay Tagkip in Julita town while P2 Million is needed to repair the washed out section along the Kiling-Tabon-Tabon Road at Barangay Calsadahay in the municipality of Tanauan.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has directed the Department of Public Works and Highways to prioritize the repair of basic infrastructures like roads and bridges, that were damaged in the flooding brought about by the 11-day continuous rains. (PIA 8) [top]
