PGMA honors soldiers

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (28 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo honored soldiers of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division during her visit to Davao City yesterday.

PGMA exhorted the sacrifices made by the soldiers which are very important victories in fighting terrorism.

Some of the awardees were LTC Ricardo Santiago based in Tupi, South Cotabato and Major Rolando Rodil from the Compostela Valley Province.

PGMA recognized the efforts done by the 25IB which was responsible for the capture of Mohammad Baehakki who is suspected to be a member of Jemaah Islamiya. Baehakki was captured in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental.

Soldiers who were wounded and killed during the encounter in Baganga, Davao Oriental were also awarded with military honors. Families of the soldiers were also given financial assistance.

"Recognizing the works of these soldiers only stresses the new level of advancing peace process in Mindanao. We are not just focused in fighting but on a new level which includes interfaith dialogue and other strategies," President Arroyo said.

The president personally appreciated the heroic acts of the soldiers as they were considered instrumental in preventing the elements of New People's Army from conducting an attack in one of the municipalities of Davao Oriental. (PIA) [top]
