PGMA cheered by Mindanao women community leaders

by JMD Abangan

Davao City (28 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday took a respite from the day's hectic work and gamely pose for photo opportunities with women beneficiaries of government programs and projects.

She graced the Panagtigum sa mga Kababayen-an (women congress) organized yesterday by Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) XI that anchored on the theme "Kababayenhan, Nakiglambigit alang sa Kalambuan" (Women: Participating in Development).

Cheered by more than 400 women community leaders and workers, she came inside the Tulip Grand Plaza in Matina, here, at exactly 12 noon after inaugurating the construction of a two-storey, four-classroom-school building in Sirawan Elementary School.

It took several minutes before she settled down as she took time going around, shaking hands with the women who were all smiles in reaching out their hands to greet the President.

She handed over awards to Southern Mindanao women who were found excelling in partnering with the implementation of government interventions designed to bring out participation and involvement of women in community service and development.

Awarded were Teresita A. Luna of Dona Asuncion in Pampanga, Buhangin this city as Best Tindahan Natin operator; Marilyn C. Pino of Sto., Talaingod in the province of Davao del Norte. The Magdum Self-Employment Assistance Kaularan (SEA-K) of Magdum, Tagum City got the recognition as the Best SEA-K.

Other DSWD interventions which have gained strong involvement of the women sector are the Kapit-bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services: Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay (KALAHI-CIDSS KKB) and Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI).

Awardees called on the President to go on giving attention to the poor and the least fortunate and to continue her fight against poverty.

"Kaya po mahal na pangulo, huwag po kayong magsawang tumulong at pansinin ang mga kaunting pangangailangan namin lalo na kaming mga kababaihan dahil maasahan nyong ito ay direktang makakaabot sa aming mga hapag kainan, (Beloved president, please go on helping and giving attention to the little needs especially of the women for you can be assured that whatever you'll give us will surely reach the tables of our families)," said Luna, a SEA-K beneficiary and Tindahan Natin operator.

Magdum SEA-K representative Angelina Berondo on the same occasion expressed appreciation to the government's pro-poor interventions saying "through your programs, hunger and poverty are indeed responded by your administration."

Arroyo stayed at the women congress over lunch together with Peace Process Secretary Jesus Dureza, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral, Presidential Assistant Madeliene Marfori Senator Edgardo Angara, Congressman Abraham Mitra of Palawan, Congressman Isidro Ungab of Davao City 3rd District, Congress Vincent Garcia of Davao City 2nd District, and OIC-Davao City Mayor Myrna Daludo-Ortiz.

She then motored to see the reconstruction of Davao City Generoso Bridge after which she graced the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Mindanao cluster congress at the Grand Regal Hotel where she delivered the keynote speech. (PIA) [top]
