DepEd issues guidelines for 2008 graduation rites

Tuguegarao City (February 29) -- Graduation rites and commencement exercises for public schools for schoolyear 2007-2008 will be held any day between March 24-28 this year with the theme "The Filipino Graduates: Celebrating Achievements, Pursuing Opportunities."

This is embodied in DepEd Order No. 13 series of 2008 signed by Secretary Jesli Lapus which likewise contains the guidelines on the conduct of the graduation rites.

According to RD Jesus Taberdo of DepEd RO2, the agency strictly adheres to the policy public schools are not allowed to collect graduation fees and contributions for graduation rites and no non-academic projects shall be imposed as requirement for graduation.

He explained that Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) may solicit voluntary contributions from their members but teachers and principals must not be involved in the collection.

He also said that any contributions for graduation must be coordinated with and properly reported to the PTA officials and members.

Meantime, requirement on extravagant or special attire including venue for graduation exercises and yearbook shall be on a voluntary basis, Taberdo said.

Graduation exercises must be conducted in appropriate solemn ceremony befitting the graduating students and their parents and must not in any way be used as a venue for political forum, Taberdo added. (PIA Cagayan) [top]
