PGMA visits Baler tomorrow to speak at 109th anniversary fete of siege of Baler
Baler, Aurora (29 June) -- After her successful 10-day working trip to the United States, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will visit this province tomorrow (Monday) to speak at the twin celebrations of the 109th anniversary of the Siege of Baler and the 6th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.
The President is expected to arrive in Manila from the U.S. at 2:30 tomorrow morning and not at 4:30 a.m. as earlier reported. Mrs Arroyo after resting from a long journey is expected to arrive in this capital town at around 10 a.m.
The President's activities here start with wreath-laying ceremony at the marker for the Siege of Baler located at the Baler Church fašade. She will be assisted by Sen. Edgardo Angara and Spanish Ambassador Luis Arias-Romero.
She will also lead the ribbon-cutting rites and the viewing of the museum and archeological exhibits that portray the gallantry and bravery of the Katipuneros.
As the country's oldest municipality and also the capital of the province of Aurora, Baler is a third class municipality that houses various centers for trade, resorts, public institutions and business establishments.
Baler is the home of the historic Baler Church, where Spanish soldiers held off Katipuneros from 1898 until their (Spaniards) surrender on June 2, 1899 to the brave and gallant Filipino troops.
Founded as a settlement in 1609 by seven Franciscan Missionaries headed by Fr. Blas Palomino, Baler was converted into a pueblo after the Augustinians took over in 1658.
Later in 1898, Baler was taken back by the Franciscans. Baler was incorporated to the province of Tayabas (now popularly known as Quezon province) in 1901 following Col. Cornelius Gardeners reestablishment of the district of El Principe by virtue of Republic Act 648 of 1951.
The province of Aurora was founded by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos on Aug. 13, 1979 by virtue of Batas Pambansa Blg. 7 he signed. This act was the fulfillment of the prayers of the people of Baler and Casiguran to become fully independent from the Province of Quezon. (PIA) [top]
