Davao City (4 July) -- About 50 elements of the New People's Army (NPA) who acted as demonstrators raided the Banaybanay Police Station yesterday (July 3) at 9 in the morning,
The group who was on board two Elf vehicles maneuvered around the Municipal Hall which is just 15 meters from the station.
"We were having our weekly Fellowship Breakfast attended by all municipal employees when these two vehicles filled with demonstrators arrived in the area," said Banaybanay Mayor Pedro Mejos who is within the vicinity when the attack happened.
He narrated that armed men positioned at the center of the vehicle suddenly fired their guns at the police station which left one police officer wounded.
"The police are undermanned that's why the rebel group took control in the area," he said.
Regional Police Director Andres Caro reported through a text message that initial investigation showed that the NPA carted away six M16 rifles, two 9mm pistols and one caliber 22 rev.
Caro also said that elements of the 1106 Provincial and Regional Management Group as well the Philippine Army are now on pursuit operation in the area were the NPA elements are believed to have fled.
The attack happened after communist rebels warned of more attacks following the killings of two members of the 3rd Special Forces Battalion last Monday in the public market of Nabunturan, Compostela Valley Province. (PIA) [top]
