Davao City (23 July) -- The Davao City female jail of the Bureau of Jail Management & Penology (BJMP) was adjudged as "Best Female Dormitory of the Year" during the 17th BJMP anniversary celebration held last July 12 in Quezon City.
In the same nationwide search, Davao City Jail was also chosen as one of the three finalists for "Best City Jail of the Year."
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, in a television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" said that the city government has improved the jail situation in Davao.
Dili na gyud selda ang inyong akita sulod sa city jail kay maorag balay-balay nga gagmay na ang tua didto, maorag bungalow-type, pero gikuralan ra gihapon ang tibuok paligid sa jail, the local chief executive said.
In Malacaņang, the government is considering the implementation of entrepreneurship modules in the prison reform program of the Bureau of Corrections.
The entrepreneurship program for prisoners would provide a "means to be self-sufficient and build their self-confidence and belief in themselves once they are released and undergo re-integration into society", said former Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye now an active member of the Monetary Board.
The program, Bunye said certainly makes sense as it is a reality that many former inmates still experience difficulty in finding employment because their prison record still makes some employers wary.
"Programs like this means providing inmates to be self-sufficient and be able to build their self-confidence and belief in themselves, Bunye said. (PIA) [top]
