Davao City (7 August) -- San Miguel Corporation (SMC) launched its SMB Community Clinic - Specialized Medical Services on Wednesday to provide medical services to the poor residents of barangay Darong Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
San Miguel Brewery Inc. general manager Roberto N. Huang in an interview said the project is part of their corporate social responsibility even as he said that it is the company's small way of giving back to the community which has been home to its Davao Brewery for 13 years.
"We at SMB are serious in living up San Miguel's commitment in reaching out to the community where we operate," he said.
He also said that SMC have company medical staff and since not all employees seek medical check up all the time, they opted to come up with the project so that their services will be shared to the members of the community.
The diagnostic center will house a medical team headed by a medical doctor to ensure the wellness of indigent residents who lack the means in seeking medical attention. Free medicines will also be provided to the patients.
Expected to benefit around 200 patients for the first six months, the SMB community clinic signifies the company's commitment to support the Department of Health's nationwide program and the local government unit's initiative to make medical services reach far-flung areas in the country.
Darong barangay captain Ranulfo Tumala, Jr. for his part said they are grateful of the new community project and considered the new structure as part of their tourist attraction.
He said their barangay is home to several beach resorts and other scenic spots as well as industries with San Miguel Beer, Inc. leading them in their other community projects.
"With the presence of SMB in our barangay we've noticed that more investors continue to locate," he said.
He said they are expecting soon the operation of the hydro plant project of HEDCOR with P6 billion investments.
The other projects are the Hatchery (chicks), four big poultries, the Aqua Ski (shrimp), and the Ayala Agricultural Corporation (coconut).
Darong ranks third among the 18 barangays in the municipality but with HEDCOR soon to operate Tumala said they would grab the first slot as they expect their local income to increase. It has an income of P2.4 million both from the IRA and local revenues. (PIA) [top]
