Gov. Generoso, Davao Oriental (14 August) -- Now it can be told! The dawning of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental has just begun as it celebrated its 1st Almasiga Festival on July 29and 60th Founding Anniversary on August 1, the festival highlights the richness of the past that has magnificently blended with the promise of the future.
Mayor Vicente Orencia is truly awed with the great transformation of the municipality.
"Our beloved Gov. Generoso has gone through many faces of ancient culture that makes the municipality famous of its historical significance," he said.
Formerly called Sigaboy, the name was officially changed to Governor Generoso by virtue of Executive Order 156, in honor of the late Gov. Sebastian Generoso.
Gov. Generoso takes pride of the 1st Almasiga Festival, a celebration of its rich culture, and thanksgiving for the bounty of its natural resources.
Almasiga was taken from the word "almasiga" which means a tree variety that yields resin for the manufacture of paint.
Thus, Almasiga Festival connotes an expression of unity and among cultural minorities and the local constituents.
Most importantly, the Festival envisions heightening environmental awareness and concerns as it pushes for protection and preservation of the town's vulnerable and threatened biodiversities.
The highlights of the twin celebration were the historical parade and the theatrical musical-dance-drama presentation.
Other activities were the Almasiga Tree Planting, Grand Opening of Sigaboy Mini-Park, and the launching of the official website of Governor Generoso (www.govgen.gov.ph).
While Gov. Generoso still remains an almasiga-producing municipality, it has transformed and bloomed into a beautiful tourist attraction.
Last year, it ventured into a Diviing Expostiion, attended by divers from the province, across the country, and from Europe.
They were amazed with the serenity of the place, and the peaceful sound of the waves coming from the deep blue waters, that can only be found and felt in Governor Generoso.
As such, the municipality is now also known as one of the best diving sites in the province and in the country.
Another pride of Governor Generoso is the Cape of San Agustin, proving Davao Oriental's deep religious history.
The Altar has a cathedral-like stone foundation. It is believed to be the altar where St. Francis Xavier celebrated the Holy Eucharist when he set foot Sigaboy. It is 60 ft. high from the ground. Amazing rock formations and the white sand are the main attractions of Cape San Agustin with the endless smash of captivating waves ideal for surfing.
Governor Corazon Malanyaon is happy with the metamorphosis of Gov. Generoso, saying 'we are blessed to have Gov. Generoso, with what it can offer, and with what it can impart for us in history.
And history is indeed, for Governor Generoso with a total land area of 37,425.3800 hectares or about 6.11% distribution of the total provincial land area. The town is shaped like the body of a shrimp and is composed of twenty (20) barangays, destined to place Governor Generoso on the map of tourism wonders. (DXHM-PIA XI) [top]
